Lunatic Chengguan

Tag: Chinese,englishadmin @ 7:16 am

This is a translation of a post from NetEase. Before we start, some background knowledge that might help.

Apart from a regular police force, throughout China “Chengguan” enforce the law. They don’t catch criminals but are more like security guards hired by the local government. Catching criminals and investing crimes is left to the regular police, basically all Chengguan do is wander around public places making sure everyone is behaving themselves. They have a reputation for being overhanded thugs for their rough handling of beggars and street sellers.

A car in front uses his electronic card, and just as he changes the clutch and starts to pull out, an old guy selling watermelons walks out in front of him. The old guy stops and lets the car go first, then out of nowhere comes a Chengguan. He comes over and grabs the rod for the scales he uses to weigh watermelons, saying that he’s conducting commercial activities without a licence.

The old guy doesn’t react for a bit, and is a bit confused, then ten seconds later says to the Chengguan: “All I did was let a car go in front of me, who said I was selling anything?” The Chengguan, who was in his early twenties, was really pissed: “If I say you were selling stuff you were selling stuff, what are you going to do about that?”

The old man didn’t say anything. An old farmer, who was minding his own business making a living by selling his own produce, and had come across such a heartless thug.

By that time lots of people had gathered to watch, and all were telling off the Chengguan. He felt like he couldn’t back down, and finally said something that made everyone really furious: “Kneel, accept your mistake and I’ll let it slide!!!”

These words came from the mouth of a Law Enforcement Officer of Provincial Capital level. His serial number is Y000243.

The Noughties

A few people I know have written updates about what they did during 2009; I thought I’d do something a little different and let you know some of the stuff I’ve done over the last decade, from 2000 – 2009. Here are four big things that happened to me.

1) Met an acquaintance in front of Starbucks in Raffles Shanghai. She brought a friend along named Aika. If you’re not sure of the significance of this, have a look at my “relationship status” in Facebook.

2) I went to Shanghai, in the People’s Republic of China and stayed there, for about 4 and a half years. I can hardly believe it now that I’m writing it. It was a rush, and about four months since leaving, I feel it pulling me back.

3) I did a degree in Music and Media studies at JMC/Macquarie University. It’s kinda a blur. In the years since finishing, I have realised that music isn’t as important to me as I tried to make it seem. People say that I’ll get back into it, and I’m not really fussed either way.

4) At the stroke of midnight on 31/12/1999 I was a native English speaker, and could get by in Mandarin. Now I speak English, Mandarin, Japanese and passable Korean; I read the Chinese newspaper each day, read Japanese manga now then and am working on Korean. I put down my musical instruments and developed an interest in languages.

I’ve of course done other things, but those are the big ones!
